It’s another month, and another author for Virtual Book Club For Kids!
Last month we did a Fancy Stick Crown, from our favorite Julia Donaldson book – Stick Man!
September we did a Pigeon Handprint Craft, Inspired By Mo Willems – Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive the Bus.
Today we are counting with Pete the Cat!
We read Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons by Eric Litwin.
Anywho – I created a SUPER SIMPLE extension activity to go along with the book, Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons, a button rhyming & counting book that is so fun to read – and (spoiler alert) there is a belly button involved – ha-ha one of those super silly words that kiddos find HIL-arious!
“BELLY BUTTON”
he-he!
I furthered the counting & button fun (after the giggles commenced) by creating a Button Counting, Graphing, and Sorting activity.
This activity is so very simple (only requires the printable & some buttons), that we brought it over to our neighbors house and got our math & reading on over there!
I say it’s more fun to read & count with friends, don’t you?!
We counted.
We sorting & graphed by size and shape.
Then we graphed & sorted by color.
There are limitless ways to learn with this simple activity.
- counting
- sorting by size
- sorting by shape
- sorting by color
With this activity they worked on…
- color hues – the buttons varying only in color can be sorted and classified by color.
- sizing – the buttons varying only in size can be sorted and classified from smallest to largest or vice versa.
- different/same – the buttons varying in size & color can be sorted and classified by their sameness & differences.
- counting – by added a number card, they are learning the visual recognition of the number in words (the number card) & then counting it out in a tangible object (the buttons), therefore assimilating the two together (great for all you visual learners!)
- symmetry – by lining up the buttons on the dots they are creating symmetry – symmetry in color, size, or shape.
Such a super simple activity that has a multitude of ways to learn!
So let’s make it happen! What you’ll need are:
- The book – Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons
- The buttons – Assorted Size Buttons
- The printable – the super simple printable I created
Now you’re all set! :)
We would love for you to come join us in all the fun!!!
