Okay – Daddy (that means you hubs!), Grandpop, & Grandpa if you are reading this – STOP NOW, it’s a surprise – step away from the blog –you’ll find out soon enough ;)
For everyone else, here’s a last minute homemade DIY gift you can totally whip up on the fly (aka before Sunday!)
So, this Father’s Day – we got just a tad craftier. For last year’s Father’s day craftiness we made this fingerprint artwork for daddy.
This year, it was a mama & kiddo collaboration.
So, how did this come to fruition?
Well, hubs is a beer glass collector – he has a BAZILLION beer glasses, steins, mugs, etc. etc. I remember looking in a catalog not too long ago and thinking of ordering an engraved beer glass. So, hmmm why buy one when I can make one & hmmm does he REALLY need another beer glass?!
So, I decided to do it myself in a non-beer way.
Although the idea came from a beer glass – hubs definitely DOES NOT need any more beer glasses to add to his massive collection. And, I wanted to involve the kiddos somehow. Currently the kiddos are very much into their Learning Tower and like to help in the kitchen in any way possible, so we made another favorite of daddy’s (spicy things!! ;). The kiddos stood in the Learning Tower then added & stirred the ingredients, before I put it on the stovetop. And, voilà – homemade sauce in a homemade container (we even made them for Grandpa & Grandpop too), because why not?!
With that, let’s get down to brass tacks.
This is a three part project – {the etching of the jar, the printing of the tag, and the making of the maple chipotle barbecue sauce} – to complete this homemade DIY father’s day gift.
-
rubbing alcohol
-
Armour Etch Cream (glass etching cream)
-
glass sealable jar (I used 3 of these)
-
small paintbrush
-
adhesive stencils (I used these)
-
vinyl gloves
-
printable (download below)
-
optional: slip-on pour spout
-
Clean surface with rubbing alcohol.
-
Apply adhesive stencil to desired location on surface (I did the initials of the men, using the last name in the center with the upper-case font (the “K” as shown), the first name to the left (the “e” as shown), and the middle name to the right (the “t” as shown)).
-
Wearing your vinyl gloves, open the etching cream container and follow the instructions for the etching cream (make sure you read the directions thoroughly before beginning!).
-
Next, apply the etching cream, in a thick layer, to the exposed letter surfaces. Let sit for 5 minutes (in the instructions that come with the cream, it says that when using vinyl stencils, it requires extra time). I found this to be true and let them sit for the full five minutes to enhance the etching.
-
After five minutes, under running water, rinse jar downward removing all cream. Next, rinse again, this time with soap and water. Dry thoroughly to see if final results are satisfactory.
-
Next, to seal & clean completely – run the jar through the dishwasher.
-
Finally, dry completely and print out labels below. Attach labels and smooth to top of jar.
-
Using the optional pour spout, pour sauce mixture into jars, then seal. BTW, I {love} my pour spout – it is the most amazing thing ever (genius idea!) and it really helps when pouring from a pot to a smaller container.
The heat of the chipotles are sure to be a favorite in this delicious, syrupy, smoky barbeque sauce.
Ingredients
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, whisk together ketchup, maple syrup and dark-brown sugar, Dijon mustard, and adobo sauce.
- Simmer, whisking occasionally, about 15 minutes, until sauce is reduced.
- Using the optional pour spout, pour sauce mixture into jars, then seal tightly.

Hi,
Planning on making a bunch of these for Christmas gifts for all of the men in my family! Just wondering though – after sealing the jars does this need to be refrigerated? Trying to figure out logistics for shipping across country…Thanks for the help!
Melissa Klinker says
Hi Aubrey – yes it does need to be refrigerated unless it is canned properly using canning procedures, which I did not. My family is close so I unfortunately didn’t have to mail them anywhere, but I do know that Fed Ex offers refrigerated and perishable shipping :) Hope that helps. xx
