Dewey The Cat Christmas Ornament

And I’m back with yet another fun and simple Kid-Made Christmas Ornament, a Dewey The Cat Christmas Ornament to be specific.

So, who is Dewey The Cat?!

Well, he was a little orange fur-ball that was abandoned in a library return box, the librarian nursed him back to health, then he became the library’s official cat, and was named Dewey Readmore Books (the name coming from the Dewey Decimal System). It’s a true story!

My kiddos love the Dewey The Library Cat story. We first listened to the audio book story in the car, then we got the kids book which was fun because the kids could put an image to the story. And just recently, when we pulled out our Christmas books this year, I surprised them with the Dewey Christmas book. (There is also the adult book version if you’d like to read the story yourself :)

So, as I mentioned, this year our Dewey The Cat Christmas Ornament was inspired by the super cute children’s book Dewey’s Christmas at the Library by Vicki Myron.

The holiday season is in full swing at the library — the lights are twinkling, the wreaths are hung, and Christmas bells are ringing. Inside the library, Dewey longs to be part of the holiday fun and after a series of silly misadventures, Dewey finds a way to add his own special touch to his beloved Christmas tree — and the results are Dew-rific!

As part of Dewey’s silly adventures he decorates the library Christmas tree accidently, on purpose?, with string, like shown on the book cover. We decided to create the little white cat ornaments that are on Dewey’s Christmas tree. We thought the best way, and easiest way, to accomplish this was to use Sculpey clay!

Dewey The Cat Christmas Ornament

Here’s what you’ll need:

Here’s how to make it:

Start off with rolling out a small chunk of Sculpey clay using your rolling pin.
Once rolled out, punch out many kitties using your mini cat cookie cutter.
Using the toothpick, poke a hole at the top of the kitty for the ribbon to go through.
Now, bake the kitties on the parchment-lined baking tray according to the Sculpey clay directions.
After baking the cats, let them completely cool.
Once the cat charms are completely cool, loop the ribbon through the top hole and knot.
Using the same ribbon, wrap the cat’s neck once with the ribbon creating a bow in the front.
Optional: If your bow is not staying down, with parental supervision, tap a couple of spots with your glue gun to tack it down.
