playdough: Chocolate Playdough

Wednesday, June 20, 2012 2 Comments

Seriously, ya’ll, it can’t get any better than CHOCOLATE play-doh – can it?!

Well, lo & behold, I made some play-doh without using my usual Kool-Aid method!  I decided to live on the edge and try something new (Kool-Aid colors are lacking in the natural color arena – go figure – guess no one wants to drink chocolate flavored brown Kool-Aid – HA! ;)  It also just dawned on me that my “living on the edge” is pretty lame-o!  Tehehe, what’s a SAHM of two supposed to do for kicks…experiment with play-doh recipes, that’s what :)

I wanted an activity for the younger kids at the party to occupy themselves with, that also correlated with the “little man” theme.  It became suddenly clear that I had these lovely mustache cutters
that I was not really taking full advantage of.  Along with being a traditional cookie cutter (well, in my case a cake cutter – HA!), they have a stamper on the top of each cutter to make intricate designs resembling the hair for the mustache.  GENIUS, simply genius idea!  So, light bulb moment – this calls for play-doh!  I wanted brown play-doh to go along with the whole “little man” theme.  The colors I used for the party were varied hues & shades of brown, cream, white, and black.  So I needed to make me some brown play-doh – STAT!  So picture this…it’s midnight and I’m trying to be all creative…brainstorming…brainstorming…then CHOCOLATE!!! Don’t chocolate thoughts pop into your head at midnight, no?

It turned out sooo purty!  And it smells sooo good, too, good enough to eat!  But don’t eat it – ewww – and make sure if you decide to do this recipe your kiddos are old enough to understand that this is a toy, not food.  It may be confusing to them if they are too little (because I’ll tell you now, it’s nothing like store-bought play-doh, and can easily be confusing to the young lads because of the smell & texture :)

CHOCOLATE PLAY-DOH

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup salt
  • 2 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1 TBSP. unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 ½ TBSP. vegetable oil

Directions:

  1. In a saucepan, whisk together the flour, salt, cream of tartar, & cocoa.
  2. Add water & oil to dry mixture and whisk until smooth and blended.
  3. Place saucepan over low heat and stir continuously until it forms a ball – about 5 minutes (it will be impossible to stir).
  4. Remove dough from saucepan onto a mat and knead it several times while warm.
  5. Play immediately with dough or store in a sealed container for later play.
  6. Although it may be tempting – DO NOT EAT PLAY-DOH ;)
  7. Seriously – don’t eat the play-doh! :)
